Cinemas full of faces and names we recognise immediately... Hollywood stars and existential philosophers are all put together into what could just as well be

the Platonic cave, and are shown looking out, at us, or at nothing.

The people that confront us in these paintings appear disarmingly knowing and self-possessed.   There is something powerful and mysterious and disturbing about beholding the image of the human face. Tracing the currents of emotion that follow from performer to the crowd, from the observer to the one who is watched she creates a unique sense of connection through a series of close ups which create a feeling of intimacy and

confinement..."I am always preoccupied with the politics of popular culture, who we admire and the figures we repeatedly represent, reveal a lot about who we are. I think of some of my paintings as not only paintings of famous figures, but portraits of the society who formed them and made them famous."
